SILHOUETTE

Bewildered by a silhouette within
A square of light,

      I had to blink,

Attempting resolution of the fine-
Cut image at the tunnel's end.

      The plank-deck

Floor I walked over wavered in the heat
              Of early summer;

      Every step a creak

Of weathered wood beneath my feet.

      My heart is thumping in my neck,
The tunnel swallows me,  illusions bend
Perceptions of my eyes and brain;  dimmer
Grew the light around me,  while the silhouette
Came nearer,  more distinct.

            I seek

A meaning in its form,  not daring yet
To give her outlined figure any name,
           Despite an urgent inner ache
To do so:  miles and years that separate
Are present in my thought;  I know the game
Too well to thus be gulled by any quick
Phantasm conjured like a sweet
Sensation that eludes attempts to make
It real,  denying any concrete

            Actuality in the outer world:
            Will it become a story others read?

Now walking on I let hope plunge to bleak

   Oblivion within this timber covered-bridge;
   While making to the silhouette a covert   pledge. . .
