HUNGER PANGS

Bleary eyed, with damp ringlets swinging,

Swaying caressingly against your cheeks

Face flushed softly from a deep peaceful sleep

You walk in from behind pouting sweet,

“Mama, I’m hungry”, groggily you breathe,

And, I am instantly transported way back

Into the past, when you were but

No more than a two and half feet tall lass…

How often did you then wake from your nap

With a rumble in your tummy, wanting that

Bottle of milk or a small snack of cheese

To snuggle onto my lap as you ate it in peace;

I would then smell the sweet scent of your hair

Inhale that special baby smell floating in the air

Gently trace those curves and crevices so deep

As you satiated your hunger, dozing half asleep

But now you stand five feet tall and a half more

A lovely young lady by any measure far so

Poised on the threshold of time to start fresh

A journey into life’s complicated wilderness;

And yet as you come to me my sweet lovely darling

With your face flushed soft and faintly pink

I cannot resist enfolding it gently within my palms

And stealing one tender, precious, memorable little kiss!
