COMPATIBILITY

Her face is
wrinkled- her eyes tired
She sits beside him-lost, unnerved
Her companion of fifty years and more lay
Hit by age-weak, uncomprehending, incoherent
She tends- and he feigns to be aloof
Bracing himself for the final shove
Almost blind, near deaf- this old man
Waits for death- cutting all ties and knots
To his struggles the wife stands mute witness
All her prayers have come to a passé
She still prays for recovery- still prays for his health
But she knows defeat is staring in the shape of death
She sighs and tries to ease his pain
With assuring smiles that all will be well
Ignoring the bickering, the complaints and barbs
She goes on smiling as her beloved loses consciousness.
