Wonderland

how do you know we're really awake?
when I opened my eyes you were gone-oh,
but how precious were those summer days,
that melted down in a burnt orange glow.
laying next to you I fell asleep
watching your face disappear in the dark,
a cheshire cat in reverse. shadows
became light, silence the song of a lark.

how did you get so far away so
fast? is this the next morning or the dream
of the night before? it can't be real
when you're not there, bathing in the warmth
streaming through the blinds, arms outstretched in praise
of the sunrise. whose fantasy was it, yours or mine, we
lived so fully? how could anything
so intense be just imaginary?
