PRIDE AND PREJUDICE

every night before my sleepy eyes

fleeting images of times gone by

when I was just another selfish guy

When mom came over to smooth my brow

I turned her away with a "leave me alone now"

can i make it up to her somehow?

The beggar girl, face streaked with dirt

her mouth downturned, eyes full of hurt

her outstretched hand I tried to skirt

The plant , a gift from a longtime friend

to the thrash can it was slyly sent

can I have it back to keep again?

My neighbor of another race

would smile at me, I'd turn my face

how do I my clumsy steps retrace?

So many more whose touch i spurned

while pride and prejudice brightly burned

would I do the same if time returned?
