Free bird

she wondered where they were going,
their faces white and frozen, pressed against the glass.
nothing would make her get on that
big yellow bus; someone had to drive her to class

the first day. she stood by herself
in a corner and watched monkey see, monkey do,
so eager to please, little round
pegs in a round little world. the sky's always blue,

grass is green, turtles don't know how
to fly, flowers grow right side up, and every child
speaks the same language-except her.
somehow she didn't fit, couldn't be neatly filed

in a slot between alice and
jerry. she was just different, said all the wrong things,
and didn't know how to tell them
she would rather be a free bird with broken wings.
