OUTSIDE LOOKING IN

One looks upon another being

As a contestant on the stage,

Outward appearance matters most

And more sadly, even age.

We shake our heads if, God forbid,

He should have colored hair,

We turn away with sheer disgust

And leave him standing there

Wondering why we looked at him

With looks that could really kill;

And if he sports an ear-ring, then

Our rebuff grows stronger still.

If we would take a closer look,

Befriend him from the start,

We may find pearls of wisdom

Stored deeply within his heart.

Too quick to judge a person

By his manner, dress or accent,

Our Lord did nothing of the sort

When to sinner’s houses He went.

He told us we’re just to love and

Leave the judging to Him alone,

Befriending the friendless we may find

Rewards we’d never have known.
