I LOOKED FOR...

I looked for you
in the soft light of dawn
and I searched for you
in moonless gloom
I lay exhausted
under the mid-day sun
dreaming of you
a chimera of fume
I plumbed the depths
of my own heart
to fathom you
or at least assume
I floated to the stars
to find you there
raced like a meteor
in the vastness of doom
But you were nowhere
not in a tomb
nor in the nectar
of a flower in bloom
Yet, you were within me
in the recesses of my soul
like a mischievous child
in the shadows of my womb
