Radha waits anxiously as she slowly works
Most chores that day remain undone,
For radiant dawn has brought with it a hint,
Of a promise to be fulfilled that day in spring.
Her ghoonghat pulled low, Radhe churns the milk
Her eyes seeking that lithe shadow at the window sill,
Oh! When will her Shyam come lustily by
For today was the day they would surely unite!
In the streets the dhol booms loud and clear,
As all the Gops and Gopal robustly sing and draw near,
Colourful gulal flies free into the spring air,
As near Radhika's porch the merry mob swells.
Flung open is the door with abandon and gay
The throng is suddenly all over the place,
Radhe runs wild, shrieking her joy at the crowd
Her delight masked by protestations most loud!
Krishna corners her skillfully behind the door,
As she cowers with her face in her saree folds,
With laughter booming loud, sure and male
Krishna holds, and then gently pulls her hands away;
As Radhe looks deep into those infinite eyes,
Her ecstasy bubbles forth and spills radiant light,
Kaanha reads in them her love so clear and pure
So gently smears her face with colours of his soul
As Radhe-Krishna are lost in their love supreme,
The entire world is filled with joy and gleams,
Lovers all over, in that single instant unite,
As the divine couple smears each other with colours of life.
