The Crowd
The crowd had gathered like vultures Encircling around a fresh kill, Many were just caught up in the crowd At the place now called Calvary’s hill. The deed had been done, now for the wait Until death had made another claim, The soldiers, busy gambling for his clothes, In their faces, no reflection of shame. His eyes glance down from the cross, To His mother, who in agony looks on, Even in dying He takes care of her, as He entrusts her to His disciple, John. As Jesus painfully surveys the crowd, No disciples of many years can be seen, Fearing for their lives, they now hide Understanding not what all this will mean. For a time, Jesus seemed abandoned, Seemingly, to the crowd He’s now alone… Suddenly words, heard coming from the cross! “Forgive them, Father”, for them I’ll atone. In times of pain, grief and disappointment, We should remember His words that day, And forgive those who trespass against us, Through His death He showed us the way Twilah - 2003 **************
