Recesses of The Mind

How simple it is to flash a smile

When asked how things are progressing,

Putting on the face of contentment

To keep the world from guessing

That life is not always as it appears,

Some affairs of the heart must be hidden,

Camouflaging what lies deep within:

Secrets, fears, or a love that’s forbidden.

But how does one turn off the thoughts

That run rampant though the mind,

Keeping alive the same memories

One’s determined to leave behind?

At times, when lost in meditation,

The mind dwells where it shouldn’t,

What might have been… but isn’t,

What could be done…what couldn’t.

Suddenly feeling the hot sting of tears,

Tasting the salt, a product of healing,

Weeping for all the wasted years,

Only God knows the pain one is feeling.

The moment past, the thoughts put aside

Until triggered again by some memory,

Each day that passes is a victory gained,

Until the battle’s won, and the mind’s set free.
