THE NAUGHTY NAUTS

Come all you girls and boys to me
and listen very close
For I shall tell you secret things
of monsters and of ghosts.
Of all the places you may live
this always will be true,
Along with mom and dad and sis
another lives near you.
Under beds dust bunnies hide
And things clump in the dark,
That's where the Naughty Nauts
leave their secret mark.
Do not, on days when Mother stays
they show themselves at all
But when night comes and lights are out
the Naughty Nauts will call.
There late at night in houses dark
in bedrooms small and meek,
Through ruffled wool and cotton cloth
is heard a tiny shriek.
And rustling of things unknown
and foot falls go unseen
While acrid odors faintly drift
to eyes that may yet dream.
In that space of wake and sleep
their open eyes may glare.
They may whisper a promise then
so caution, have a care
For you see, it is not me
who they've come to steal
But girls and boys with their toys,
the size of a small meal.
The Naughty Nauts might whisper low
that we can't understand
And promise things both great and small
that children might demand
Then coax them to the window sill
to gain a special prize
And steal them in this hidden time
through night and darkened skies.
So children please, now hear my words
and say a prayer each night.
Tell mom and dad you love them
before they leave your sight.
Please never open windows
even in your dreams
'Cause as you slumber peacefully,
Naut is as it seems.
