Goodbye

I am at the airport

having checked in my bags

I look around

seeking that face...those eyes

...they wouldn't leave mine

fingers entwined as we lingered

oblivious to the crowd

...calling all passengers...

Where are you?

...talking hurriedly about inane things

brittle nervous laughter over jokes that  weren't

We didn't want to let go..

...ready for boarding...

I look around almost desperately

ears straining for that voice

...that never really said the words

that never said goodbye

until I did

...last and final call for passenger...

I turn around one last time

and hope no one is looking

as tears well up...
and I choke as I whisper

"Goodbye"
