Earthly Bounds

Above the line of trees that bind

the blue sky to the ground,

Just within the arching clouds

that soar without a sound,

Moving in a skyward path

that none might dare deny

Were long necked and legged giraffes

who, somehow learned to fly.

The politicians babbled on

but I can’t understand

Why everyone was so upset

by something simply grand.

Some said they were a menace

to aircraft in their flight

And some said they were refugees

from trainers impolite.

I just smiled and waved them on

to greater things to come

And as they flew far out of sight

into the evening sun,

I made a wish that someday I

might be outrageous too

And escape all these earthly bounds

to fly as giraffes do.
