“The Wedding Coat”

Gently he welcomed her into his arms

As they slowly glided across the floor,

Ballroom lights lowered, the dance floor theirs,

Both became lost in years gone before.

The man? Her now grown eldest son,

The woman? The mother he’s loved all his life,

Today he was united in holy marriage

To the one he’d chosen to become  his wife..

Heads together, words privately spoken,

One had only to look and they would see

Tears now falling from the eyes of both

As this phase of their lives now ceases to be.

The music carefully chosen by his mom,

“The Wedding Coat,” was softly playing,

Flashbulbs popping as all eyes beheld,

Only God knew the words they were saying.

“My son, you’ll always be my child,”

The words pierced my heart in remembrance,

“Seems like yesterday I brought you home,”

The words continued throughout the dance..

“I have come to learn that loving you

Is all about gently letting go.”

Today those words became a reality,

Her mother’s heart was telling her so.

As I watched the one I’d raised go through

The alternate joy and pain of letting go,

Knowing the feelings she was experiencing

Brought tears to my eyes, my heart hurting so.

The dance now ended, mother and son embraced,

The bride and groom now start their new life,

No more of just being a son or daughter,

Today they had become husband and wife.
