WILDFIRES

It's written in the book on James
And I'm painfully aware 'tis true,
We often speak before we think,
Spewing words that can cut in two.

Most any wild beast can be taught
To respond to his trainer by name,
But another beast, the human tongue
Is proven impossible to tame.

One watches how the wildfires spread
Encompassing all in its fiery path,
There's no stopping it, only retreat
To avoid its' consuming wrath.

The fires the tongue can initiate
Spread as quickly as the above,
When words of degradation and hate
Replace all thoughts of brotherly love.

Both blessings and cursings flow
From that little tongue so small,
Spreading deadly poison that can
Make the strongest person fall

Or lifting a person from the depths
Of loneliness, fear and defeat,
Only we can stop the wildfire
From consuming all we meet.

Perhaps we should dwell on this
As we plan that 'meeting" or "visit".
We can either lift up or tear down,
It's really up to us...or is it?
