Although compressed into a few brief lines,

A world of meaning is the poet’s art.

Each word selected carefully combines

With others to reveal the writer’s heart.

Whether he writes of love or tells a tale

Or rails against injustice he has seen,

Each one who reads his writing may avail

Himself of opportunity to glean

A glimpse into another’s mind, which makes

A privilege less human than divine.

It matters not what form the poem takes

If inspiration is allowed to shine.

Through poetry our souls may sometimes meet

And find the universe laid at our feet.
