Pandora

from the depths of the heart,
she cries out in stifling silence.
once again the dreams start;
reaching for the light, trying to make sense.

I hear her fragile voice begging for freedom
from thoughts dark as death.
they won't give her a choice, don't ask for ransom.
she's choking for breath,

bound and gagged, forgotten
and alone. I try to find her. she leaves
songs and poems hidden
in places where I store my worthless sheaves

of daily journals. no one hears but me.
when the day is done,
she begins; the echo lingers mournfully
and fades in the sun.
