Mission Accomplished

These tears in my eyes,
Glittering guilt,
How many more nights,
Sleepless,
Before they wash away my pain,
Those haunting images,
Shut out the imagined screams,
A thousand banshees wailing,
Accusing,
Reminding me of my sins.

How do I answer
The questions of my heart,
The eyes of every stranger,
And familiar ones too,
Boaring through me,
Taunting,
A mirror reflecting my image,
The beast that I have become,
Ceasing to be human.

For I listened to the liars,
Let their words overshadow
The almighty commandments...
"It is an honour," they had said,
Ending the war,
The suffering,
Establishing our supremacy,
Just the press of a button,
Simple,
Convincing me of a greater good,
Draping me in the darkness
Of duty.

My moment of reckoning,
To pierce through
With the light of reason,
And I failed,
Ignored my conscience,
Its silent voice unheard,
As I made the choice
My tears never let me forget,
Dropping the nuke,
Wrecking the world,
I accomplished my mission...
