DEVILISH ENCOUNTER

I once met the Devil
On the way to hell
Who's ever evil
Under his shell.

I bade him good cheer
And I tried to chat
But his looks jeer
At me from under his hat.

A long silence descended
As he kept to himself
Anger I felt ascended
In fear I retreated to myself.

Smoke belched from his jaws
Tongues of flame flickered
Fumes of hate from his maws
Filled the air as he muttered.

I thought I could use my charm
On this most vile creature
Who's ever ready to do harm
To our brittle human nature.

"Repent, my fearsome comrade!
Bend your ways to good deeds
Discard your red banner on parade
Scatter your love's seeds."

He cast a glance most doleful
Everywhere he spread grief
Man's plight ever so mournful
In his presence joy's brief.

"Be gone! Man my mortal foe!
Throughout all the ages
I bring nothing but woe
Sins are my daily wages!"

Long I wondered his hold
Over Mankind's destiny
His devious plots so bold
Against the world's sanity.

"Come, give Man some respite
Make peace with us all
Spare your venomous spite
Let's heed God's call."

Longer his teeth grew
Sharper his claws curled
His hate ceaselessly brew
Until words most foul he hurled.

"I was made lord peerless
Over all things earthly
To every hymn I'm heedless
Causing pain I enjoy heartily.

"Damn your cursed piety!
I spit on your charity!
There's no moral satiety
In the filth of my hilarity.

"Oh! what bliss to see torment
Etched on the righteous!
How delightful to foment
Hatred in the courteous!"

Near the searing pit of doom
I paused and quivered
Into the chasm of gloom
Tortured souls shuddered.

He cut a figure most perverse
Against the raging flames
He swore in oaths diverse
Against all human names.

"Profanity I ardently worship
On my altar burns damnation
Eternal grief marks my kingship
No Man can hope for salvation.

"Cursed race is God's masterpiece
In His image created He falsehood
Evil He etched as a centrepiece
Of His flawed design for Manhood.

"For ages down history's way
Flows this piece of fiction
Tis' all along God's idea to sway
Mankind to timeless perdition."

A smile akin to fondness
Played on his parched face
A wave tinged with mildness
Ended our mutual gaze.
