She hurried
through the subway
With fear in her mind
And pepper spray in her hand
It was dark inside,
with just one single bulb glowing.
She had a feeling
that someone was following
Soon the subway echoed
with her hurried footsteps
She wanted to be out of this darkness
and decided to halt only near the steps
But suddenly a hand caught hold of her
She struggled to free herself but the grip grew stronger
Once she realized what she had in her hand
She was scared no longer
She collected all her strength
and sprayed the pepper in air
It was followed with loosening of the grip
and words of "that's not fair"
She ran further and reached the steps
She held the can close to her chest
and walked towards open space
Few steps away she came across a man
staring at her like a wolf
The grip on the can grew stronger and she eyed the man
He looked at it, just smiled at her and walked past
Her forehead now,
had beads of sweat glistening in the sun
Walking on the roads was no more fun.
An old man was looking at her
with concern in his eyes
He walked towards her and asked what was wrong
The girl looked at him, Can still in her hand
He was aged and looked wise
She told him what had happened
In the subway
and then the man who chuckled at her
and crossed her way
The old man put his hand on her shoulder
and said he would walk with her
She was thankful to the old man
And walked a few steps with him
Till the time she realized what he was doing
The hand, which was on her shoulder
Was now on her waist
She looked at the old man
And he put on a smile
He thought was his best
All of a sudden the girl started laughing
She shook her head and pushed the old man
She walked a few steps further
Opened her purse,
And kept the can inside.
She had realized now,
The spray could not be used on all
She knew she had to stand on her own
Taking someone else's' support
She was sure to fall
The further steps she took
Reflected the confidence she had gained
This short trip of today
Had taught her a lesson for life
