Take care, little one

What are you singing, little bird
sitting alone on that tree
Your melody is soaked in grief
Are you also hurting like me ?

I wonder whom you are singing to
The garden is quite empty
That is like me - writing,
when there's no one here to read

Are you singing about your hurting heart
or the pain in your chewed up wing
I ache for myself and for you too
hearing the song that you sing

There are many in the animal world
Some are gentle birds like you
and there are ferocious predators
who gore the defenseless, too

There are some like little birds
even in our human milieu
and also wild cats who gleefully prey
on the sincere, trusting few

Some skins have been created tough
and how sharp are some claws!
But you and I aren't thus endowed
by nature's inexplicable laws

In our own different worlds
we are only the prey
When the predator would strike again
we can never say

Stay safe and heal soon, little bird
Sleep on the highest branch of the tree
Keep away from the cats and never
naively trust them, like me
