FRIEND

Broken teeth

Scraped knees

Bandaged arms

Sharing lunch, whispering secrets

Everything had its special charm

You welcomed your teens with braces

Each day found a new discovery in you

Boys were what you most hated

Nobody, but your best friend, could understand you

College bought a new phase

In your already exciting life

Swapping clothes! Sleepovers at each others places

“Oh! I wish I was Shahrukh’s wife!”

You held each others hands through tense exams

Cried through sleepless nights

When the boy you loved broke your heart

Your friend set out to put him right

Another world beckoned you

Your eyes and hearts filled with hope

Now there was your career

And to fulfill your dreams, many hopes

Your spouses added to you

And you were a group

Though life was hectic and fast paced

You stayed in the groove

Children were now a part of you

You were rarely in touch

Though each of you knew what the other was doing

Keeping someone informed doesn’t take much

Children grew up and flew the coop

Now you suddenly had a lot of time

You started meeting up again

Everything was like old times

Now you are grey-haired grannies

On grandchildren you swap notes

You recommend each other recipes

And help the other one cope

Through the frenzied pace of life

This was the only thread running through

So this is the day I wish to say

‘Friend I am so glad I had you’
