THE FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

They tell me -I should feel good
A good citizen- I dutifully obliged and felt good.
Soon I was given a golden handshake
Such polite ousting! I was awed and really felt good.
Jobless I wandered on roads and watched
The NRIs felicitated-the cricketers eulogized
I dismissed the thought of my hungry brood
And for the sake of mother country, felt good
I saw posters everywhere - happy faces, cars, mobile phones
India is upwardly mobile- I got one more point to feel good.
I went home and wife grimaced at the empty bag in my hand
Damn her rusticity-she knows not how to count her blesses
So I told her about the slashed airfares and cheap laptops
That sensex was booming and forex overflowed
But she interrupted me and pointed to the empty bag
What to eat and what to wear?
Very impertinent she is-but I hold tenaciously to the feel-good factor
