A New Year

Empty resolutions,
Words of yesterday,
Withering without meaning,
Spoken with an enthusiasm
That lingered for a moment,
Whispering conviction
Before being sucked
Within the whirlpool of destiny.

But at the threshold of tomorrow,
Those lost victories are soon forgotten,
Promises renewed,
For there is a lesson learnt,
A path relaid with each defeat,
And the time one bides
Slowly sharpens the sword
For the final move,
The winning thrust.

Tomorrow may be a day in vain,
Voices muted by defeat again,
But there is hope,
For I know the inaudible whisper
Will one day touch every lip,
Become a chant that envelops all,
And this thought strengthens my resolve,
Leads me to a beginning
That conquers the end,
A new year,
An inevitable triumph...
