THE DARK KING OF THE MOMENT

In
shadows he approaches, proud and strong,
Obscure his aspect, but with regal air.
Perhaps it's Pluto, charmed by Orpheus' song
To send Eurydice from his dark lair.
It could be erlking in the forest night
To work his mischief on some hapless child,
Or keeping Beauty from her hoped-for flight
The Beast who rules in remote castle wild.
But stay! 'Tis none of these before my view,
This dark king of the moment that I see,
For though the face is unknown, it is you,
And captive in your power I would be.
Alas! Soon from this dream I must awake
And momentary kingdom from you take.
