SECOND CHANCE

Even in the kiss of a sweet summer breeze,
I feel your touch; it is your touch I feel.
Never separated, and yet separate. You surround me
in your magical cloak; I am invincible.
In this condition, there are no enemies
outside; the ones within, you can reveal.
You are my champion and my advocate;
you can disarm my ego. You provoke the inevitable.
I begin to know your faults, but who has none?
This only makes mine easier to bear.
If you don't recognize yours, it's not my place
to enumerate them; the mirror proves to be infallible.
You are an angel in human form. The one
that's divine, I love; the other I share
this world with-defend, lean on, embrace.
One that endures, behind the one that moves, is unalterable.
I close my eyes; I'd rather be diagnosed
insane than to see my idol fall.
How can it have come to this? Who ARE you?!
Each suspicion I uncover is insurmountable.
Like a sacrificial rite, I overdosed
in self-effacement. And out of all the flames,
a phoenix in my heart rose to proclaim:
the only worthy lover is the Unknowable.
