Every five long
years
The ship of
state
Rolls in fears
As all its edges
grate
Buffeted by the
turmoil
Of parties and
beliefs
As leaders go to
toil
Bringing people
no relief.
All around
waters blue
Flow with calm sureness
Giving all clear clue
And signs of firmness
That no usurpers can storm
The vessel with impunity
Or in faithless mergers form
Coalitions against solidarity.
In shallow
waters shades of tint
Show up with
dimmed brilliance
With dented
pride, blunted flint
Once pals, now
foes _ broken alliance
Each shoring up
rekindled vision
Of freedom for
imprisoned shame
Of revival of an
expired mission
For a symbol
once covered with fame.
Blue, green, red
streak across
Creeds; ideas,
promises swell
A leap of faith
to cross
Other boundaries
to dwell
Among the
zealous messengers
Or stay with
tested prescriptions
'Tis a choice
vexing the passengers
Aboard the ship
in its rough excursions.
