IF I WERE

If I were a whippoorwill
    I’d whistle all night long
Hoping that a lovely girl
    would hearken to my song.

If I were a firefly
I’d blink this poem to her
And hope that she might reply
    with sexy, blinking purr.

If I were the west wind
    I’d caress her lovely cheek
And brush by lips and fingertips
    and in a whisper speak……….

Such melodies as warm the heart
and move the soul to reach
For those elusive qualities
    of love beyond our reach.
