The Promise

They were my entire universe,
Those two lovely cousins of mine,
I was the pampered little one,
In that threesome so fine.
The years rolled by swiftly,
And before long I was Five,
Very happy and safe in my belief,
That there would never be a goodbye.
But soon, somehow, I would begin to cry,
More often than mother could understand why;
My cousins they still loved me dear,
And yet now I would not want to go too near.
One day I hugged mother hard and long,
Then whispered in her ears in a song,
"If they are Two, why am I One?
Isn't it time I too had someone?"
She laughed out loud and hugged me tight,
There were tears in her eyes and some light,
With a solemn promise she told me true,
That soon I would have my brother too!
