PERFECT CURVE

In the dimming light of the setting sun
A sudden turn of the head as we talked
I glimpsed it for that eternal instant
As she flew out of the turquoise depths
Gleaming silver from the distance
Curving a perfect curve
As she leapt that arch, frozen in Time

Catching the sunlight in her fins
Ablaze with a beauty unsurpassed
Or so I thought.
For no other glimpsed her but me
That vision rising from the ocean floor
A spectacle for my eyes alone
A sight that will remain within me
And enthrall me for years to come

What caused her then
To leap so high to touch the skies;
Did she want to embrace the sun
As it slowly went down under the rim
To seek those stars that remain hidden
From eyes that look but cannot see
Grasp the rays as they disperse in the wind
Be these her reasons to fly instead of swim

Or was she fleeing some deep dark secret
That hounded and scourged
Was that a valiant leap to freedom from foes
That pursued her from deep ocean floors
But I think it was a sheer leap for joy
That made her seek the heavens above
For she had sprouted wings on which to fly
And revel in the freedom unequaled thereby
