MEDITATIONS   ON  'GOODBYE'
++++++++++++++++++++++

I find myself ambivalent to all

'Goodbyes' :  for they can mean a premature

Finality,  the hope things could be well,

Despite a closed and adamantine door.

Of course,  I  often weep to feel that door

Unyielding to my hand,  through which no call

Is answered,  the sense of firm bolts,  with floor

Beneath,  and frame around,  a seamless whole.

Yet doors are curious:  those of the soul

Or heart are closed with painful force,  to bar

The entry of another heart,  to tell

The lover thus:   ''Keep out!... knock here no more''.

But as with doors,  so paths encompass more

Than meets the eye:  their twists and turns  could pull

My feet along them---mayhap to a door:

Though ever,  one locked door shall haunt me still.
