LINES ON KALPANA CHAWLA,
LOST IN THE COLUMBIA

Kalpana,  born in India:  yet died

More distant from it than any of us

Here--- ending as a meteor that shocked

The world she orbited;  and all because

The deadly angle of a fragile craft

Met with an unforgiving atmosphere

Resisting its arrival,  to inflict

Bright disintegration,  all pictured clear.

I only know Kalpana's image from

A newspaper:  but I pray her spirit

Will have peace,  her family,  relief.  To them,

And all in India who mourn---  comfort.
