MERMAID ASHORE
+++++++++++++++

Where hamadryads haunt the cottage wood,

Nereid haunts too, for her demesne has now

Matured; the birches hold aloft a hood

Of shading green across the garden, so

Delightful on a summer day; and all

The winter long display their silvered bark

Above the mantling snow beneath. Meanwhile,

The nymphs have made a home, and through the dark

Of tender nights their gleaming forms will flit

Among the the branches in a sylvan grace--

Elusive creatures, shy of speech, and fleet

Of foot. And if the Lady calls, her face

They seek; for elemental love they need,

And come in courtesy to fair Nereid.
