ANOTHER FIRE

Twisted shapes of wood
light up the cold winter sky
fingers of fire reach out
reaching me as I huddle
frozen in heat and spark
as old rheumy eyes watch the blaze
flaming memories of earlier days

There was another blaze once
another fire, a nameless night
when bodies touched like static
and heat scalded more than fire
sweat dropped like molten wax
as I felt the wetness of your tongue
caress my skin with songs softly sung

A cold wind chills my bones now
were these those same gusts
that once held such cheer
when they carried your smell
perfumed with fragrance
earthy with our love-making
and the breeze that fanned your body
whispered tantalizing secrets to me

Twisted thoughts ask the question
how do I burn my own memories
can I place them on a dying fire
and hope they turn to dust
or will they return like some ghost
once again to torment and taunt
like another fire on a nameless night?
