ALL MY JOY

With the mist rising above the lake
all my joy slipped away. In its place
dreams invade the interminable night, break-
ing it into smaller, endless segments. Your face-

another day, a different life; love
                leaves traces of poignancy behind
it, vanishing swifter than a startled dove.
Still I search the skies hoping you'll return. My mind

cannot console my heart. Where are you
now? Who laughs at your jokes, combs your hair,
begs you to sing? Why was it so easy to
abandon this child that followed you everywhere?
