Humbled

I thought I had all the answers
for every question asked,
and in that misplaced arrogance
I had irrationally basked.

Success was then my birthright,
ambition, my sword;
the world was for the taking,
no chasm I could not ford.

You should have seen me then
I stood ten feet tall,
assured and believing
I could never falter or fall.

Now I stand breathless
humbled by this feeling
of tenderness alien to me and
my mind and senses reeling.

Nowhere had I learnt
to cope with this ache
that leaves me longing for you
wondering if I have what it takes.

I had conquered lands and riches
and marched many a mile,
now I'm content to sit in front of you
spellbound by your smile.
