A
Burden We Carry

They shed their skin
As the season changes,
Wriggle out and leave it behind
Their identity and their traumas
And slither away
In the undergrowth
Renewed, alive
To begin once more
Their journey ahead
With their souls and courage intact.
As we step amongst the dead leaves
And trample uncaringly about
We sometimes come across
These corpses,
That tell the tale
Of a life born again;
See that glistening skin
So beautiful and dry
And yet dead and forsaken
By those to whom it belonged.
Nature gave them this skill
To walk anew and afresh
Why then did it I wonder,
Leave us
To carry about
A burden of our past,
Our pains and our agony
As long as we live
And not leave it behind
Shed and forgotten in some forest afar.
