YOU

You got your daddy’s hair

You got your mama’s chin

Wherever in the world you go

You are judged by the color of your skin

You inherited your values from your parents

Education and the world taught you other things

You name was decided even before you were born

Your dimples are just like aunty Kim!

We are born a mass of expectations

We are supposed to fulfill them all

Whether we want to or not

Is rarely given a thought, if at all

Play, grow up, study, work and marry

Have children who’ll forward, your name carry

If you wish to deviate from this pattern

You’ll be made to feel sorry

For whom are you born?

For whom do you live?

Life goes by being what others want you to be

And still you say I am ‘Me’.
