‘Just a Housewife’

So, what do you do?

Oh! A ‘Housewife’ are you?!?

An empty look, a raised eyebrow

Maybe a smirk?

You wish the earth would open right there and

Swallow you up!!

In a world of super-women and achievers

Where do you stand?

You are ‘just a housewife’

You are never allowed to forget that!

Of course there are new names coined

To give you a sense of self

A ‘Home-maker’, a ‘Home-manager’, and

God knows what else!

Little does anyone realize

The work of a housewife is never done

She is all of everything, all rolled into one

A manager, a teacher, a doctor, a nurse

A strategist, a chef and the one who holds the purse!

No holiday, no sick leave, no off days

No appreciation, no gratuity, no going away

There is so much to do, still nothing to say

She never just ‘sits at home’ ‘whiling away the day’

Being a housewife is a thankless job

It’s not as easy as it seems

Nurturing others lives, watching them go ahead

While you yourself have buried your dreams

So, the next time you meet a ‘housewife’ and at the thought you baulk

Just remember, she is not, ‘just a housewife’ after all!
