Sombre Thoughts

Every night for many a day
I've tossed and turned and lain awake
A prey to dismal, dreary thoughts
Of which I know not what to make.

That innocent face, wondrous fair
Devoid of pity and love and care
Torments my thoughts and dreams alike
Until I am in despair.

She who nursed me on my natal day
With loving hands and angelic grace
And at whose breast I sought solace
Now lies still in death's embrace.

His quiet voice that urged me on
Through infancy and adolescence
Is now a lingering memory
Echoing on an empty silence.

They with whom I whiled away
The precious moments of my youth
Have departed since long ago
In search of better worldly pursuits.

No friends, no family, no love
No consolation left
To ease the pain of memories
That leave me of reason, bereft.
