I thought I had lost my god
and so I went searching for him.

I put on lamps and peered
into dusty corners and dog eared books.

I spoke to wayfarers and asked
about him from all whom I met.

I prayed in temples and other buildings
lighting candles with earnest fingers.

I gave away money to those who begged
feeling very small and poor myself.

I did all that I could, and still couldn’t find him
so I returned home, disappointed.

And then, in a flash of light, I saw him
in my breath and warmth and heartbeat.

I asked him where, and why, he’d gone.
He laughed and said, he hadn’t.

I had just lost and found myself.
