A lifetime of regret.....

I saw the little nightingale,
perched upon the tree's branch,
fascinating it was, singing merrily,
on my lonely country ranch.

It mesmerized me with it's lovely voice,
singing songs to it's beloved,
but I don't know how and why,
a strange thought entered my head.

I wondered if I could kill it,
with one shot of my air gun,
unthinking, I pressed the trigger,
and the deed was done.

So full of life it'd been,
expressing happiness at being alive,
now it lay dead at my feet,
'coz of the monstrosity I'd come to contrive.

It's been years since that happened,
but that memory still tears me apart.
Still I regret what I did, and wish,
if only..I hadn't listened to my heart.
