DWAND Bandhi mein is bandhan mein jis din Duniya meri hi badal gayi Hui babul se parayi mein jis din Tumhare naam se hi jud gayi
The day I tied the nuptial bond My life changed entirely The day I left my parent's home I bound myself with your name
Naam se judna, theek tha lekin Naam mein apna badal na payi Astitva mera hi dhoomil ho jata Pehchaan mein apni mitta na payi
This bond was acceptable though I couldn't give up my maiden name It's difficult to erase my individuality And, I cannot loose my identity
Kaisi ye reet, kaisa yeh riwaaz Naari ka yeh kaisa durbhag Sab kuch chootaa par aah na nikli Ab kathin hai bas ye tyaag
What are these customs, why this tradition? Why women face such invidious destiny? I left everything for you without a sigh But this sacrifice is now difficult
Uthte jaagte... saanjh sawere Bachpan se jo thi meri pehchaan, Kya us ko kar doon gumnaam? Tumhi bolo, kya kar sakoge yeh balidaan?
Day and night, every moment How do I relinquish it now? Tell me, will you abandon yours for me?
~Rakhi~
*This poem is a voice of all those females who are forced to change their Maiden names.
