NABH KE PANCHII
Jab unke shabdoon
ko mein When sometimes I dare gather His words from the garden of life New questions immediately assail me And pierce my heart like Karn’s* arrows
They fly, erasing those unending limits Those answers that intermingle in the wind I can feel them enveloping me And yet fail to grasp them within
Easily by those birds that fly free Yet for earthbound humans like me They will forever a mystery be
It is not a sin to be carefree like the birds, Nor is it a folly to be human But, for sure it is far easier for them To clearly view the soul of those down below
This may well be my biased outlook That perceives the birds as eternally free And anguishes over those that walk the earth As destined to crawl in captivity
But yes, oh Bird, I did want to learn to fly Taught by you one fine day But then, if I had attached my wings with wax Wouldn’t I have perished into the sea
On hearing this, you will laugh and say “Dear one, then learn to fly without wings” Oh, free bird of the open skies Do you know, that the horizon never meets
