THE BEGINNING

It was late at night,
When the moon was shining and
The stars were twinkling.
It was late at night,
When a man stepped out of a train.
It was Mahatma Gandhi.

After him came one man,
Then two men,
Three men,
Then a crowd came rushing out,
With arms in their hands,
With anger on their faces,
With slogans rushing out of their mouths.
They fought and fought,
Thousands lost their lives,
But not for waste.

At last, in August 1947,
It was declared that India was free.
